Eels? Yes, not on your plate but in a huge fish tank that dominates one wall. In it are colorful tropical fish and humongous undulating eels —- some spotted, some plain — which are fascinating to watch while you wait for your order to arrive.
Hartford is far from Cape Cod, but J’s Crab Shack tries for seaside ambiance with the tank, undersea-themed murals and a seafood-rich menu. There’s nothing fancy about dining here: You order at a counter, find a table and pick up napkins and plastic cutlery from a hit-thelever-and-grab-a-utensil dispenser. And you bus your table when you are finished. It’s a busy spot for takeout or eat-in meals, and the adjacent fish market also attracts customers.
You can eat well here for relatively little. The small lobster bisque (which is actually pretty big) costs $3.75, and the large $1 more. Steamed shellfish is $8.95 or $9.95; fried seafood runs from $6.95 to $14.95; combo platters, such as shrimp and scallops, are $11.95 to $15.95; broiled seafood is $11.95 to $14.95; salads go for $2.95 to $13.95; and sandwiches run $6.95 to $11.95. The kids meals (12 and younger) are $4.95
