Fresh Fish Market, Restaurant & Bar

THE FOOD: Fried, steamed, baked or broiled, the seafood here is simply prepared and very tasty. Portions are ample, and prices are reasonable, which adds to the place’s popularity. There are bar-food apps such as Buffalo wings and cream cheese poppers, but you can get those anywhere. Mussels in wine and garlic sauce, clams on the half shell and chowders are more tempting: We’d give the clam chowder a B+ for its oceanic tang and ample clam pieces and potato cubes, but the sweetly smooth, creamy thick lobster bisque gets a straight A.
Steamers, on the menu year-round, are a big bowlful of very sweet clams waiting to be de-shelled and dipped in clam broth or melted butter.

Crab cakes are good-size and not overly bready, and they, like the other meals here, come with a big portion of french fries and a little cup of good, if unremarkable, coleslaw. The whole-belly clams plate (you can get strips, but those are for sissies) is a heap of freshly fried, crunchy-coated clams, as good as many I have had on the Cape.

Want a lobster roll? At J’s, you can choose the hot-with-butter or cold-with-mayo variety. I’ve always been partial to the hot kind, usually served on a New England-style top-split hotdog roll. Here, the roll is a substantial crusty one, the kind you might get with a sub sandwich.
That was a nice touch, and the filling of lobster claw meat chunks was satisfying. Lobster dinners vary from 1¼ to 3 pounds and are market- priced, as are the crab claw and king crab legs entrees. Other dishes that sound worth trying include lobster ravioli, steamed mussels, fried lobster tails, broiled swordfish, and baked haddock with lobster stuffing. There also are Caesar salads with grilled chicken, fish or lump crabmeat and shrimp scampi. Meat-lovers can order a 12-ounce New York strip steak. There are also kiddie-size clam strips and a fish-and-chips plates, plus chicken fingers, hamburgers or hot dogs, all with fries.

J’s serves wine and beer and bottled and machine-dispensed soft drinks.
